  1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent
    social groups or issues?

My final product uses similar conventions to the songs in the R&B genre. In other music videos of the R&B genre they use their music videos to tell a heartfelt story. In our final product, we used similar convictions, such as using a non-diegetic sound to convey the message instead of singing along to it. Like other music videos of the same genre, the acting was based on the lyrics of the song. Since the lyrics of Thinkin Bout You are talking about a past relationship, we used the lyrics of the song to tell the story of a teen still stuck on their ex-relationship. Our music video represents the teen social group. The issue presented is the main actor is going through a series of emotions due to them still wanting to talk to their ex. This represents the teen demographic throughout the video by the use of costumes, acting, and props. The costumes used are what the teen demographic would do at the mall and the beach. For example, at the mall they would commonly wear a regular fit like a T-shirt and joggers and to the beach they would commonly wear a crop top and shorts. The acting represents the issues that teens commonly go through within their relationship, especially after they have already ended, and how the friend groups with teenagers help in these situations. Also, the main prop used in the final product is a phone. The use of phones is vital within this social group to communicate amongst each other, and the use of the phone in the video shows how exes commonly communicate through text.

  1. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?

My final product engages with audiences by telling a story that people go through time and time again. It pulls the audience in by telling a story of an experience that is relatable to most. By providing a story about a young girl who is still thinking about their ex, and not really knowing how to deal with her emotions while being with her friends, but eventually gets the chance to talk to her ex and realizes that she’s fine without him and no longer misses him. Although the target audience of this was teens, adults and other demographics can relate to it. It allows for the audiences to be more than just teens since most people have been through similar circumstances after a breakup.  The purpose of this story is to entertain, but yet showcase what goes on through a girl's mind post breakup. Also, to have the audience experience the main character’s emotions. It would be distributed by posting it on places that people usually watch music videos on. Such as posting it on platforms such as YouTube and Vemo. As well as social media such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat. Using platforms allows more traffic to our video, since it can be spread amongst different viewers.

  1. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

Through the duration of this project, my production skills were expanded. It helped better my research. Since prior to planning and filming we had to research music videos that have similar conventions, it helped me to have a broader look. While researching we had to look at the acting, angles, costumes, props, etc. Also, my ability to produce an organized product was also developed. Storyboards were used in our planning process, which also helped with the organization aspect of this project. It helped to organize the music video scene by scene which made the process move smoother. My skills when filming was also heightened. While filming I had to make sure to keep my group on task. My group did well when it came to filming, but I just had to make sure we got done what we were supposed to do. This task developed my “directing” skills if you will. Also, when it came to editing, although I did have some experience, I still had more to learn. Throughout this project I used CapCut to help me edit my video. To help expand my skills I used different platforms to find tutorials to use when I was lost. From the tutorials I was able to learn how to cut out scenes smoothly without it being too noticeable. This skill was useful since some of the footage that we filmed was messed up by distractions while at the beach. My communication skills progressed over the duration of this project. Although I already knew the people in my group, communication was a little bit lacking on my part. I didn’t really let others know when I would do something, but I would have to since this is a group effort. Over time I got better when it came to keeping my group mates in the loop.

  1. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

To be able to get the best possible music video, it was crucial that we integrate the use of technology. Like I said previously I used CapCut to edit, I used my phone to film, and I used Blogger for my blogs. The reason why I used Blogger for my blogs is because that’s what was presented to us by our teachers. I used my phone to film out of convenience. Also, since we used an iPhone the quality of those phones and their camera reflect the same quality of an actual film camera. I didn’t only use my phone for editing, but also used it to edit. I used my phone for editing since it was the easiest place for me to edit. Not only that, but it was also easier to retrieve the footage using just a phone. I used CapCut for editing since it’s one of the easiest editing tools to use. Not only because it was easier, but because it was the same software I used when it came to editing past projects, such as my commercial.
